Tellus Partners With Kansas City CDFI on FDIC-Insured Accounts
Fintech firm Tellus teams with Central Bank of Kansas City, a certified CDFI, to offer consumers FDIC-insured deposit accounts blending technology with community banking.
Fintech startup Tellus has announced a partnership with Central Bank of Kansas City, a certified Community Development Financial Institution, to offer consumers FDIC-insured deposit accounts, the companies said. The deal pairs Tellus's consumer-facing technology platform with a decades-old institution that holds deposits as a Member FDIC bank headquartered in Missouri.
Central Bank of Kansas City holds the deposits underlying the new account, providing the federal deposit insurance backstop that consumer-facing fintech apps often source through bank partnerships. The arrangement follows a well-established model in which technology companies handle the user experience while chartered banks supply the regulatory infrastructure and deposit protections.

What distinguishes this partnership from typical bank-fintech tie-ups is the CDFI designation held by the Kansas City institution. CDFIs are certified by the U.S. Treasury Department and are required to direct a substantial portion of their lending and services toward underserved communities, giving them a dual mandate of financial soundness and community development impact.
Tellus, based in Mountain View, California, has positioned itself as a consumer savings and financial tools platform. By anchoring its deposit product to a CDFI partner rather than a conventional community or regional bank, the company signals an intent to align its growth with institutions that have a track record of serving populations that mainstream banking has historically underserved.
The partnership was announced September 28 from Mountain View. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Continue reading at All Financial Services & Investing.
