Seasonally adjusted initial claims totaled 197,000 for the week ending September 19, a decrease of 1,000 from the prior week's revised level, the Department of Labor reported.
The previous week's figure was revised upward by 2,000, moving from an initially reported 196,000 to 198,000. Such revisions are routine and reflect updated state-level data incorporated into the federal tally.

The four-week moving average, a smoother gauge of underlying jobless trends that irons out week-to-week volatility, fell to 202,250 — a decline of 1,750 from the prior week's revised average of 204,000, itself revised up by 750 from 203,250. The sustained sub-210,000 range in both the weekly figure and the rolling average points to historically tight layoff activity across the broader economy.
Claims near the 200,000 threshold are generally interpreted by labor economists as indicative of a robust job market, though analysts typically watch for multi-week directional shifts rather than any single report. The data do not capture workers who have exhausted benefits or those not eligible to file.
